Grape concentrate or grapes is the main ingredient you need to make domestic wine. It is a good idea to grow your own grapes if you have a large enough area and this will be good if you are planning to become a regular wine maker. There are five to eight basic steps involved in the process of wine making, depending on whether you are using grapes or concentrate. If you are using grapes then the fruit will obviously need to be harvested first. Do not leave behind any stem fragments on the grapes - remove them carefully. Stems contain bitter tannins.
After all the stems are removed, press on the grapes' skins so that the juice oozes out. You can do this in several ways. Most wine makers prefer the crushing method. The next process you have to carry out is known as primary fermentation. The cells of yeast will now feed on the sugars that are present in the juice. The byproducts are alcohol and CO2 - sometimes you may need to add more yeast. If you rely only on the yeast that is present on the fruit, you are not going to get a regular conversion, that is why you have to add some more.
More juice can be squeezed out of the grapes after the primary fermentation is over. This secondary extract will not be of as superlative quality as the juice obtained from the primary extent. The juice got from the first crushing did not come in contact with the stem and skins as it ran freely. This does not mean that press juice is useless however. Large scale wineries use press juice so as to improve their total production volume.
A secondary fermentation occurs in the wine following the pressing process as it is aging. Here, you are wine maker, so you can decide for yourself how long you will want the wine to ferment.
The last step of the wine making process is bottling. Bottle the wine by directly pouring it into bottles, then to stop the fermentation and to preserve the wine, add some sulfites into the bottles. The final step of the whole process is to seal the bottle with a suitable cork.
